The Ghost of St. Mary’s

The ghost of St. Mary’s is believed to be that of Father Henry Jardine, who was rector of St. Mary’s in 1879. A crypt was built under the altar for Father Jardine’s body before his death. Because he suffered from a painful facial nerve disorder, he took laudanum (tincture of opium) and used chloroform to help him sleep. One night he died from the combination. The bishop declared it a suicide, and therefore Father Jardine’s body was buried in unconsecrated ground rather than in his beloved church. There have been several ghostly incidents. When one acolyte arrived at the church, he saw a priest, in vestments, who stood facing the altar. He hurried to the sacristy thinking he must be late, only to find the rector waiting for him there. When they went back to the sanctuary, no one was there. Several people have sensed a presence in the gallery where his restless ghost hovers. A former rector at St Mary’s attempted to have Father Jardine’s remains moved from the cemetery to the church’s columbarium, perhaps allowing his spirit to rest in peace at last.
